I have seen many people who wasted their time and money taking up a foreign language and never used it or even talked with others people. Taking up a foreign language in your country is a bit harder because you don't have the change to use the language quite oftenly and hardy a change to speak to your friends unless their take up the same language. I remmember my brother took up a Janpanese class and work in a hotels as a tours co-coridators, After he resign the Job he lose some of the talking as he don't have the change to talk with somebody. What a waste. As I Like Italian language and Italian foods I decided to take the course and travelled to Italy with my friends.

We got ourselves enroll in a school in Rome with accommodation and transports provided to all historial area. The school had many facities for us to used. I enroll myselves in a food and beverage section ( hotels courses). The course are in English and We were also teach and speak Italian language in Italy. The teacher encourage us to speak and write Italian language. We will ask to speak with our colleague student in Itanian language. Within six month we master the Italian language and had no problem taking to people.

Besides the school arrange a foster parents for us after we are in the last year of the course. With this we learned more of the culture of Italy and traveler more places in Italy. Luckly my froster runs a restaurant selling all Italian crusine which I help them most of my time. After eight years in Italy I decided to return home and open my own restaurant. The restaurant are mostly pack with most Italian guest, tourist and alots of locals. Every year I will visit Italy and stay in my froster home and help them in the restaurant.

After finish my high school in Malaysia and hearing that Italy is famous for its historic city, its cultural and its artistic tradition and arts and besides Italy has many beautiful and clean beaches and the friendliness of the people and the most important to me is Italy is famous for its crusine and has many excellent restaurant to dine or the Italian crusine.

My friend and I decided to travell to Italy to futher our studies and also to take the opportunity to stay and learn the culture and the Italian language in Italy. Italian is a language which I first find it hard to learn and speak compare to English language which is a universer language. But after some encrougement from my friends to take up Italian language in Italy and besides I have hear that Italy is a place for vacation as there had many intreasting place to visits and the food there was very good expecially the Italian spaghetti with the good news and imformatiom, I decided to give it a try.

We booked our air ticket and hotels room from a tour agency and the next week we fly to Italy. The first day we landed in Italy we check in to our hotel room and decided to search for a good school in Italy Teaching good Italian language, hotel management and its food and also the school provided accomotation. Through magazine and recommotation we finally found our school in Rome.

It is worth the money we spent, as within a year we master the Italian language in Italy and we are able to write and speak good Italian language. We spend most of our time eating and I love the Italian cuppucinno and its pizza. We travellar all over Italy and we enjoy the scenery, the culture of Italy and its historic places. Not forget the beautiful beaches and the friendy people.

Laval's Laurier Senior High School, of the Sir Wilfrid Laurier School Board, is extending a unique educational opportunity to its students to study the Italian language.
Although the school did offer Italian in the 1970s when it was known as Laval Catholic High School, it has been more than 25 years since the opportunity to learn italian language other than French or English was last offered to the student clientele.

Ecco Italy, Charlottesville's Italian language and culture center based in the Main Street Market, is celebrating its two-year anniversary. Not only have the Italian options multiplied since opening in the fall of 2004, but also its popularity has now sired a new Spanish division: Spain on Main.

Debuting with a trio of conversational Spanish classes in the evenings for adults, Spain on Main hopes to expand its offerings in 2007 to include daytime classes, immersion classes and classes in Spanish for business and the medical profession.

Spain on Main is owned and directed by Christina Ball, though classes will be taught by native speakers from Spain, Argentina and Colombia.

Those interested in finding out more about Spain on Main's staff and courses are invited to attend an open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 12 at Ecco Italy/Spain on Main in the loft above Milano/Verity blue in the Main Street Market, 406 W. Main St. At this event, the public will be able to meet the instructors, check out the facility, ask questions and warm up their tongues with a few ice-breaker activities in Spanish. Light refreshments will be served.

The value of a school depends on its teachers. For this reason the Centre of Italian Studies takes great care in selecting and training them. To teach in our school it's not enough to have a degree; we require long internal, theoretical-practical training.
The candidates for teaching must, first of all, frequent a preparatory course organized every year by the Centre of Italian Studies, with its exclusive programme. These courses are also attended by teachers from state schools who profit immensely from them.
Following this the candidates must make a certain amount of attendances, both in the language and conversation courses. If considered eligible for promotion, they will be called for temporary posts.
Their first appointment will be as teachers in the conversation courses, and only after adequate practice and experience will they be entrusted with an Italian language course, in a level compatible with their university training. Every year they will then be required to attend a refresher course which is also organized by the Centre of Italian Studies. This is why our teachers are professional and have an unmistakable pedagogic-didactic style.

The director conducts the training courses for the internal teachers and he is also called to hold these courses in other schools in Italy and abroad.
Dozens of teachers have been trained in our courses; some of these have afterwards had excellent results in state schools or in a university career. From this point of view also, ours is a school with followers!

I started to organize my first courses of Italian language and culture for foreigners way back in 1986 with the original and exclusive formula "small courses in a small town". This was my idea, really courageous and innovative at that time and which afterwards proved to be a winner.

As a base for the courses I have chosen Urbania, in the Marches, equidistant between the Adriatic sea and Tuscany. Very close to Urbino but not in Urbino.

Urbania is a delightful town, immersed in the greenery of its hills, rich in history, art and culture, but small and made to measure for all tastes, quite the opposite to a big city invaded by mass tourism.

As Prof. F. John Willett (founder and first chancellor of Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia), our first illustrious visitor was able to point out, in Urbania "a student does not feel lost amongst 10,000 other foreigners as in summer courses in big universities. And it is precisely for this reason that every student is able to receive individual attention". Also "those attending the courses can participate in the local life of a very pleasant community.

There is no doubt that students will receive a warm welcome in Urbania and no doubt whatsoever regarding the quality of the study programmes".
So the town offers the most favourable environmental conditions together with the high quality level of our courses. This explains the success of our formula and the fact that at least ten other schools, near and far (in the Marches, in Emilia-Romagna, in the Venetian region and in Tuscany), have attempted to imitate it, more or less faithfully, more or less happily. And this constitutes our greatest success: we are a school with followers!

The Centro Studi Italiani, Polo Universitario Internazionale (Center of Italian Studies, International University Hub) is not an Italian university. The Centro Studi Italiani is an "international university hub" (registered trademark and name), in the sense that foreign universities hold courses at the Centro Studi Italiani, but also in the sense that the Centro Studi Italiani courses are known and acknowledged by foreign universities (refer to international collaborations in this website). Our school - the first center of Italian language and Culture in the Marches and on the Adriatic coast - started its first courses in 1986, with its own original framework and remains unique in its kind, in spite of the fact that many other schools have tried to imitate us.

From the very beginning we have been an authorised educationall center both for international students as well as for Italian citizens. Students from over 90 different countries throughout the world have attended our courses. 70% of our students come because the school has been recommended to them by ex-course members. They appreciate not only the professionalism of the Centro Studi Italiani but also our flexibility. Students learn quickly and well, thanks to the friendly atmosphere. Our study program can also serve as a framework for foreign universities and we are able to develop programs which will meet the needs of their university. “Lessons in Italian” is a course borne from my three years of instructing foreign students in Italian grammar and culture at Porta D’Oriente School. Over the years I have come to understand both the joys and the difficulties of this particular type of work. I have come to realize that foreign students need more than just Italian language instruction – they also need an instructor who can be sympathetic and understanding of their intimidation with a new language and environment, and who can be gentle with both the process of learning and the process of adapting. However, I have also found it is necessary to balance this tender approach with correct behavior; and to be stubborn when it comes to assuring that that a student acquires the knowledge essential to communicate effectively.

It is this philosophy that I have developed over the years and that has been instrumental in building trusting and mutually respectful relationships with my students.

This is the story of Clarissa, an American woman who planned to visit Italy and learn about the Italian culture. She loved the Italian language and wanted to learn it in a fast and easy way. Her additional incentive was being able to communicate with her new Italian friend, Carlo, whom she met in a chat room a few months ago.

Carlo, an Italian native, had always wanted to learn English well. He knew a bit of English like most Europeans do, but Clarissa knew only three Italian words: ciao, amore and gelato. So they made a deal. They decided to practice by speaking in each other’s native language.

Wanting this exchange to be more balanced, Clarissa decided to take a course in Florence, which is not far from the small town in Tuscany where Carlo lives.

Being an art lover, Clarissa did not have to think hard about which city to investigate. Florence is where the spark of the Renaissance movement started and flourished a few centuries ago. Italy stores more artworks than all of the rest of the world combined, and Florence is at the heart. The task now was to find a good school that would fit her personality.

A bit shy but adventurous, she asked Carlo to find a good school for her to learn Italian. However, he could not give her much help. Florence is a big city, and he would have to go there himself and check into the different schools. And, after all, she knew herself better than Carlo. So, she decided to choose on her own and went surfing the web.

To her surprise, she discovered there are many more schools in Florence that teach Italian to foreigners than she thought. There are schools for every taste and any possible interest. She even found a course to learn Italian while sailing on a yacht.

After assessing few schools, she signed up for a week-long total immersion course to give her a taste of what it would be like. She would learn enough Italian to allow her to move around in Italy. Later, she would choose an in-depth course that would take perhaps several months to complete and give her the ability to communicate on a deeper level.

A month later, Clarissa was at a school in Florence, learning lots of vocabulary she could use to get around the city. Through some classroom lessons and many trips to museums, restaurants and shops, she learned to construct sentences in Italian and to express herself. She also experienced the basics of survival in a foreign country. And, of course, she learned to better understand Carlo, who turned out to be more likable than she expected.

Now Clarissa is back in Florence for the second time, taking a six-month course with a concentration on the art and architecture of the 17th century. What a fantastic time for her—perfecting her Italian, enjoying her new skills, broadening her knowledge. Thanks to Carlo and her new capacity to converse in Italian, she has many Italian friends. When she returns to the U.S., she will connect with them in Italian via email.

These are her recent words about her continuing experience.

Everybody knows that can be one of the most fantastic experiences you can have in your life.

Three days ago, one of my students came back from a memorable, intensive course to learn Italian in Florence.

We crossed each other on campus while I was walking to teach a Level I class. She was radiant and fashionably dressed in unmistakably Italian clothes. Claudia, in her forties, looked ten years younger.

With curiosity, I asked her how it went in Italy. I have to clarify here that she took all three Italian levels that I teach at the University of Houston in the Accelerated Foreign Language Program. And that she was ready and confident to study for two weeks in Florence in a "total immersion" program designed for learning and practicing Italian day and night.

She started to tell me what an incredible time she had. Unfortunately, we could only chat in fluent Italian for a few minutes before I had to get to class. We agreed to meet again so she could tell me more of her adventures in this famous Italian city.

Yesterday we finally had the opportunity to lunch together, and she gave me a good overview of her experience in Florence. I appreciated her new Italian accent. It was outstanding and well above my expectations.

I have already experienced several methodologies used to ease students into absorbing and integrating a new language, but I was fascinated by her enthusiasm for the way it is done at her school in Florence. With her eagerness and my curiosity, we could have talked for hours and hours.

The course in Italy is designed to integrate fun and exciting adventures into the learning process. Shopping, dancing, eating and discovering unique parts of the city are all activities in a well-designed program. I was admiring the creators of the course for their capability to combine study and everyday life in such an impeccable, harmonious balance.

Italians are known for being great teachers. Creativity and beauty make them famous all around the world. On top of that, the charming environment of Florence and the Italian people themselves make, without a doubt, learning an unforgettable experience.

Here in Houston at the Accelerated Foreign Language Department, we use a unique way to learn new languages that is ideally suited to adult learners. What you should know

Information about visas for entry into Italy

Citizens from countries from which a visa is necessary to enter Italy can enroll in and attend a course provided that they have a visa for TOURISM (for stays of up to 90 days) or for STUDY (indispensable for periods of over 90 days). Before enrolling in one of our courses we would ask you to contact the Italian diplomatic representation or Consulate nearest your place of residence to obtain precise, up-to-date information.

In some countries it takes a long time to obtain a visa and for this reason it is advisable to contact the Consulates as soon as possible.

For countries, such as: Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Ecuador, El Savador, Estonia, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Malesia Mexico, New Zealand, Paraguay, Poland, Rumania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, South Korea, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, there is no obligation to apply for an entry visa for purposes of tourism for periods of up to 90 days.

In any case, even if a visa is not required, to avoid problems with the Police, always make sure that your passport is stamped with the date of entry into Italy by the Italian Border Police.

The documents normally required by the consular authorities are:

1. Passport valid for at least 3 months (for some countries it must be valid for at least 6 months) longer than that of the visa applied for
2. Return air ticket (or return ticket for any other means of transport) or the flight booking
3. Proof of possession of sufficient financial means for self-support during the stay in Italy, according to the parameters specified above.
The applicant, by means of appropriate documentation (e.g. declaration of employment, cash, credit card, travellers cheques or other), will have to prove that he/she is in a socio-economic situation or work or family position that can guarantee his/her genuine interest in returning to his/her country of origin at the end of the period of validity of the visa.
4. Confirmation of hotel booking or any other suitable accommodation.
5. Health insurance with adequate cover and valid for all the countries of the Schengen area.

Anyone applying for a visa for purposes of study must also:
a) stipulate a medical insurance policy, valid in the event of urgent hospitalization without limits on expenses or duration with 1’”INA – Le assicurazioni d’Italia”. This insurance is fairly cheap, on 03/10/2003 it costs euro 38.73 for 6 months or 77.46 euro for 12 months and covers risk of hospitalization in the event of injuries or illnesses that necessitate emergency hospitalization, but cannot be used for out-patient or domiciliary medical examinations. For this reason it is necessary to have also medical insurance from ones own country, valid in Italy, that covers these risks.
b) show documented proof of the course to be attended (certificate of enrolment in the course).

Those applying for a visa for purrposes of tourism must also:

Stipulate medical insurance cover, valid in the case of urgent hospitalization without any limit on expenses or duration, with INA –Le assicurazioni d’Italia”. This insurance covers the risk of hospitalization in the event of traumas or illnesses that necessitate urgent hospitalization, but cannot be used for surgery or domiciliary examinations. For this reason it is also necessary to have medical insurance from the country of origin, valid in Italy, covering these risks.

Once the possession of the minimum requisites required by law has been verified and the necessary information obtained from the Consulate, the student can then enroll in the course by sending to the school the enrolment form and effecting a single payment of the entire cost of the course booked. Only at that point can the school, in order to make possible the initiation of the visa application procedure, issue the enrolment certificate, the letter of confirmation for the course with the address of the accommodation booked and the receipt for the amount paid.

It is not possible to issue a visa (nor the extension of a pre-existing visa) to a foreigner who is already on Italian territory. To make possible officially extensions of the period of stay, only extensions or renewals of the residence permit are valid.

In Italy the Police cannot extend or renew residence permits of the visa is type “C”.

Before traveling, especialy to learn Italian in Italy, I was warned to not be the ugly American tourist. We must be sensitive and respectful. We must be open and understanding. We must not wear leisure suits and track shoes. I pride myself on my cultural sensitivity, which is probably why I was so traumatized when, during one of my first outings while I went to learn Italian, a fruit monger accused me of calling him a communist.

It was the first time for me to attempt to learn Italian and even experience the culture in depth. I soon discovered that buying fruit in Italy is an art. Fruit is beautifully displayed in baskets and stands, to be admired but never touched by the hands of the passing consumer. Picking up an apple for inspection in Italy is considered an act of aggression, one for which I was properly chastised repeatedly. Quickly I learned: ask for what you want, and the fruit monger, whose experience and knowledge of grape clusters is vastly superior to your own, will select exactly the right cluster to suit your needs.

Such a custom would never have occurred to me. In the US, you inspect each piece of fruit carefully, using techniques your grandmother taught you to make sure your melon is really ripe, your plums are not bruised, and your apple is crisp. But sure enough, this is what I experienced as I went to learn Italian abroad.

While I was packing and getting ready for my trip with the objective to learn Italian, my mother sat on my bed. She told me about traveling around France and Italy on the back of a motorcycle, stopping at markets to buy bread, cheese and blood oranges for impromptu picnics; she had also gone to Italy with the objective to learn Italian. My ears perked up at the mention of the blood orange-even its name sounded exotic and decadent. This was in the days before yuppie grocery stores sold goods from around the world, and in our neck of the woods, even the kiwi was still regarded as a novelty.

So, in Siena, with a few hours to spare after my first day of class to learn Italian, I wandered around the market, looking for my first taste of Europe. I had memorized that useful phrase, "I would like..." I have found that this phrase and a strong index finger are all the communication tools you need for basic survival until you learn italian. Unless you are picky. Unless you want something specific-not just any orange, for example, but a dark red, sweet, tangy blood orange.

I found a charming fruit market and greeted the monger, a graying old man with a wizened face and sharp, appraising eyes. It dawned on me that I was not ready for this first transaction after having had only one day to learn Italian! I hadn't the slightest idea how to say "blood orange" in Italian. I tried a few variations-"orange of blood" brought looks of disgust and confusion. "Special orange" brought a torrent of language, none of which I understood since I had just started to learn Italian. I settled on "red orange, you know? Red, red!". Here is where I noticed that my trip to learn Italian in Italy would have to be recurring in order for me to be able to at least communicate an idea.

My fruit monger gave up. He was a patient man, a fair man, but I now had clearly gone too far. This young, impudent man not only touched his fruit, but insulted his character. "Non sono comunista!" he bellowed. He had a lot more to say, but to the untrained American ear, it sounded rather like, solononoglionomabuonomiaabonlagliono. Using my only other phrase of Italian-"excuse me!" I scooted away as quickly as I could, the entire market staring at me curiously; the American tourist trying to learn Italian in Italy. Later, nursing a latte and my bruised self-esteem, I was able to make the connection: red meant communist. All those words of warning had done no good: even without a leisure suit, I was still that ugly American tourist.

It was several more weeks before I mastered the art of buying fruit in Italy, and finally tasted a blood orange. Buying that piece of fruit was now more than honoring one of my mother's sappy memories, but a triumph of international commerce. It was delizioso! These are the times were you realize there is so much more to learn and I am so glad I came to learn Italian. Insistence makes perfection so I will be returning to Italy to learn Italian soon.

Italian language schools are located throughout Italy, from world-famous Venice and Milan in northern Italy to historic Taormina and Otranto in the south. Choice of location is one of the most important factors in deciding which language school to attend. Without a doubt, time spent outside the language classroom is at least as important as time spent in class. In larger cities, language programs typically emphasise amenities and activities but, depending on the size of the program, can neglect individual student attention. While there may be no shortage of cultural activities and museum visits, intimate cultural experiences are more likely to occur in smaller towns and villages. The type of Italian language program you choose will of course be determined partly by your specific needs. There are many different types of program offered by language schools in Italy, including general Italian, Italian for business, Italian for academic studies, and Italian for art courses, music, design and culinary arts.

Whichever program you choose, there are several features to look for which are shared by all good programs: flexible, communicative instruction methodologies, a friendly atmosphere, personal attention, enthusiastic and qualified teachers, small groups. Depending on your requirements, the program should also provide a language qualification recognised by national and international colleges and universities.

In summary, to get the most out of an Italian language program in Italy, look for schools with small groups, qualified native-speaking teachers and programs providing plenty of individual attention. Cultural programs including excursions and activities are important, but they should not substitute for real language learning which occurs best in smaller groups and more intimate contexts. Whatever happens during your time in Italy, the most important thing is that you thoroughly enjoy the language learning experience! You will learn much better if you are happy with your program and enjoying yourself!

Documents dating as far back as the 10th century were written in Italian, although it is believed that some form of Italian language was used in the 8th century by people who did not understand Latin. Traders and clergy might have used this language to address the people of those days.

The Italian language has evolved into many different dialects and languages throughout the centuries due to differences in politics, lack of communications and mobility, and also various culture gaps as people of different origins migrated to Italy.

Differences in Dialects

There is a standard Italian language, which is taught in schools of all regions. The standard language was derived from Medieval Tuscan dialect. The dialects each have their own characteristics so even tourists can tell a difference when visiting more than one region.

The Neapolitan dialect, for example, is often used in popular songs. This language is called Napoletano. Speakers of this language change articles into single vowels. "Il" might be shortened to 'O. The Roman dialect called Romanesco is where the speaker replaces the letter "l" with the "r" sound. Toscana is a dialect used by the Tuscans where the letter "c" is often pronounced as "ch" combined.

Rare Italian Dialects

In remote areas of Italy there are rare dialects that are in danger of extinction. These often combine two languages or several dialects to form their own distinct language.

The Judeo-Italian dialect is called Italkian. It is a minority language that was spoken by people living in urban areas of Rome or in central and northern Italy between the 10th and 17th centuries. The language was very popular in Livorno. It's a blend of Italian and Hebrew, and only around 4,000 people actually use it as their primary language today.

Yiddish is another rare language that blends Hebrew and German. Ladino is a language that blends Spanish and Hebrew.

Jews who Speak Italian

At the beginning of the 20th century, Jews in Italy were fluent with their own language as well as standard Italian. They also had a dialect called Judeo-Italian, which differed by region and city. Judeo-Italian dialects were often used in Jewish rituals and the Passover Haggadah, and they were also written in Hebrew.

Madison Sowell was recently named as Honor's program director and Associate Dean of undergraduate education and, while he is eager to shoulder the new responsibilities, it will stymie his and wife Debra's other passion: study abroad

The Sowells, professors at BYU, have participated or run 10 study abroad programs in the past 25 years and have instructed in classrooms in London, England; Paris, France and Florence, Italy. The Sowells ran their first study abroad program in 1981 in Italy and were most recently, the program directors of a 2005 London study abroad.

Madison is a professor and former department chair in the Department of French and Italian. Debra teaches general education humanities courses, as well as a senior seminar for those interested in writing about dance and performance.

"The Sowells are incredibly knowledgeable people," said Corrine Foster, a former study abroad student. "They served up an incredibly difficult plate of classes for us to digest while traveling the UK. We learned a lot though! I know if I ever go back to the National Gallery in London or the Louvre, I'll reflect on my education from the Sowells and feel gratitude for their challenging lessons."

Madison is a leading expert of "Dante's Divine Comedy" and has published several works about the play. Debra is one of the only Ph.D.-level dance historians in the country. As a former ballerina, Debra developed an intense personal interest in the field of dance history and a great desire to share her interest with others.

Both Debra and Madison's classes are notoriously difficult but the Sowells put forth extra effort to ensure their students succeed in the classroom.

"Not only are the Sowells very passionate about their subjects, they care a lot about their students and students' success," said Shannon Cornelius, a 2005 London program student. "They always incorporate their real-world experience to give students a connection to the humanities we wouldn't normally receive."

In 1981, Madison was selected to begin a study abroad program in Florence, Italy. Along with his wife, Debra, and their daughter, Mary-Louise, Madison ran a program that included 20 students interested in studying Italian art, history and culture for two months of their summer vacation.

The Italian language and culture has been a passion for Madison since his days as a missionary serving in the Italy North mission.

The Sowells participated in four more Italy study abroad programs, as well as two London programs and one program in Paris, before being called to preside over the Italy Milan mission, where they served from 1998 to 2001. The heavy responsibilities that came with the calling demanded a 24/7 commitment. The responsibilities became heavier as Madison not only functioned as a mission president, but also as stake president to four districts that were in the process of emerging as stakes.

Both Madison and Debra view their professorships and the opportunity to participate in many study abroad programs as a wonderful experience that blessed the lives of their two daughters, especially daughter Laura who accompanied them during their calling as mission president and on several study abroad programs.

"Study abroad has been a great blessing for our daughters to foster a sense of on-going community among BYU students," Debra said.

The Sowell's work does not end in the classroom as they invite students from Provo, study abroad programs and former missionaries into their home.

"When you have a family not just focused on a university experience but fostered around the experience it makes it natural to open your home for social, spiritual and academic interaction with students," Debra said.

Former study abroad students have enjoyed the opportunity to see the Sowells not just as classroom professors but in another perspective, as well.

"One of the best things about study abroad was seeing the Sowells not just as professors but as parents, religious leaders and members of the church," Cornelius said. "So much of what they do and who they are is related to their beliefs and showing the connection between the humanities and the gospel."

Other students agree with Cornelius.

"Some of the best experiences in London involved learning from the Sowells at firesides," said Julia Hess, a 2005 London study abroad student. "You can only bring in the gospel so much into a classroom discussion. It was great to see many different sides to their personalities."

Both Madison and Debra look forward to the time when they can participate in study abroad programs again.

"We love being in close proximity to great museums, theater and the performing arts," Debra said.

Madison earned his master's and Ph.D. from Harvard University in Italian Medieval and Renaissance Literature. He began his professorial career in 1979 at BYU in the Department of French and Italian. Debra earned a Ph.D. from New York University in performance studies and dance history.

Wearing his blue and white Italian soccer jersey and a smile worthy of an all-you-can-eat pasta night, Carlo Pellegrini's happy demeanor this week might bother some French fans, but not Nick Ng (pronounced ing), his close friend.

Pellegrini, who was born and raised in Italy, and Ng, who was raised in France, were exchanging friendly banter Monday after Italy's win over France Sunday in the World Cup.

The banter is nothing new for this pair, after all; Ng also celebrated a soccer championship this summer. His Fort Morgan Optimist team just finished an undefeated season.

Plus Ng holds a two-nothing edge over Pellegrini in another very important category.

"My wife, Marla, and I have two small children, while Carlo and (wife) Jessica are expecting their first ... so I'll probably guide him in that area, too," Ng revealed while laughing.
Young families are just one reason why Ng and Pellegrini have become such good friends. They can talk about everything from original "football", to family, to their respective food-serving businesses in Fort Morgan.

Ng owns Café Lotus on East Kiowa Avenue, while Pellegrini's busy passion is the O' Sole Mio Italian Tratorria he owns on Ensign Street.

Yet they share an even stronger connection not often seen around Northeast Colorado.

"He (Nick) was the first guy I met here from Europe," Pellegrini recalled. "I remember he had long hair, way down his back. It was exciting to find someone who knew the Italian language and our culture."

"We have gravitated to each other because we have so many common interests," Ng added, although not enthused about confirming those long-haired days. "It's just special to meet someone like Carlo in Fort Morgan. We have so many similar cultural aspects."

After being born in Hong Kong, Ng attended a well-known French boarding school and played football (soccer) like virtually every other European youth.

Pellegrini took his soccer-playing skills several steps farther as he joined a semi-professional Italian team. So why did he choose pasta and pizza over a long athletic career?

"There was no money in it," Pellegrini explained. "If you win, you get paid. If you lose, you go home. There were no salaries."

Pellegrini still plays indoor soccer one night a week in Fort Collins just for fun. That last word also perfectly describes these two friends during the month-long World Cup journey.

Normally not a big sports fan, Ng followed the entire tournament which he described as "magic."

Pellegrini rarely missed one second of Italy's World Cup quest, even venturing across the alley behind O' Sole Mio to watch various matches on television at The Fort Morgan Times so he didn't have to go back and forth to his home.

"When the United States played Italy to a 1-1 tie, my good friend Bill Holland (publisher of The Times) kept chanting USA, USA."

"That was a victory for the U.S.," Carlo admitted. "But we (Italy) had a young team. They grew up a lot during the month", right up to Sunday's world championship match, when Italy won a 5-3 overtime shootout.

"I tried to call friends in France after the match, but no one answered," Ng said. "They were all crying."

Some are still talking about the infamous head-butt, red card and subsequent ejection of France soccer legend Zinidene Zidane. Named tourney MVP on Monday, Zidane still wasn't around during those final dramatic shootout kicks.

"Zidane is even Pellegrini's idol, everyone appreciates his skills. He's a fantastic football player," Ng proclaimed. "But his behavior was wrong. There's no justifying it ... unless that Italian said something bloody rude."

"Zidane is the man; he played in Italy for several years," Pellegrini added. "They can read lips on those tapes. We'll find out what he (the Italian player) said."

Whatever the results, don't expect any rude behavior between these local rival fans and friends. Ng actually admitted to rooting for Italy during most matches, and he maintained a classy mood on Monday.

In other words, their friendship will likely continue through many more World Cups.

"We congratulated each other," Ng concluded. "What? No, there's none of that (trash talking). After all, it's only a game."

Zidane’s creative play and match-winning spot-kick in the 33rd minute earned him top votes from seven out of the website’s nine language channels. The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year was most popular among Korean readers, who gave him 70 per cent of their votes, and Chinese readers, from whom he received 53 per cent of the votes.

Interestingly, the two exceptions to the 'Zizou' love-fest were the French and Italian versions of the site. French fans seemed to have greater appreciation for the contributions of centre-back Lillian Thuram, who took 33 per cent of the Gallic votes as compared to Zidane’s 30 per cent.

Italian fans, meanwhile, rated the France No.10 fifth with just four per cent of the votes. Users of the Italian-language version of the site instead heaped their admiration on Grosso, who received 65 per cent of the Italian-language votes for his goal against Germany in the 119th minute. Hours before the crucifixion of the holy messiah, the bells of St. Anthony's church, the spiritual and religious heart of Little Italy, ring out across the Sunday morning languor. Men and women, young and old, are coming out of the cool, dim sanctuary into the warm summer sunlight.

Holding their bibles and rosaries, they gather on the steep steps for praying of another kind, not fearing the secularism of its nature for in the earlier service Father Dominic Fiore broke from scripture to cry out "Forza Azzurri" with applause from the congregation, and no one was struck dead.

"Italy, 2-0," says Vincenzo Caminiti. He's 66, a retired painter. The plastic tag on the breast of his grey suit says "usher." He's standing with his friend, Mario Smilovich, also an usher. He's 72, a retired maintenance worker. "France is rougher than Italy, but we have a better defence."

"France is tough, I agree," says Smilovich, "but if we play the way we did against Germany, we will win. Italy will win today 1-0 in overtime."

"Zidane's the one we have to worry about most," says Sam Pecora. He's 34, works for the government. "I still think we'll win 2-0 in regular time if we play flawless like the last game."

"Zidane's good," says Smilovich, "but have you seen the size of our goalkeeper's hands?" Smilovich spreads his fingers. "One of his hands is the size of two hands."

Havana, May 30 (ACN) Specialists, teachers and students are meeting from today at the 8th Seminar of Cuban Italian scholars in this capital. This year the event will be dedicated to Christopher Columbus in commemoration to the 500th anniversary of his death.

The main topics for discussion include intercultural dialogues, the language and its teaching methods, linguistics, literature and the mass media.

Italian academics Fabio Caon, Elisabetta Mauroni and Giam Pietro Schibotto will give workshops on theoretical and practical aspects in the teaching of Italian. They will also analyze the literary work of Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli.

Scientific sessions are scheduled to begin Wednesday with a panel of professors from the University of Havana who will speak about Columbus in Italian literature, in French culture, and in Cuban literature and culture.

Director of the Dante Alighieri Society in Cuba, Emanuela Favoino, pointed out that this seminar is a propitious opportunity to present the recent achievements of Cuban Italian scholars and to enhance collaboration bonds.

The seminar is being sponsored by the Office of the Havana City Historian, the Cuban Ministry of Education and the Italian embassy in Havana.

Monica Belluci will play the role of Sonia Gandhi in a biographical film on the latter’s life, directed by Jagmohan Mundra. Monica was selected for the role due to her striking physical resemblance to Gandhi. The film will tell the story of Sonia Gandhi’s life, from being a simple Italian girl to be married into Indian politics’ first family to becoming the leader of the ruling party in India. Monica is last remembered for her role as Mary Magdalene in the film The Passion of the Christ.
Sunanda Murli Manohar, producer, has confirmed the news. She said: “We were waiting for Monica to hear the script. Her confirmation finally puts a seal on the deal. She’s excited about the prospect of playing Sonia Gandhi. The script by Carl Austen has gone through a number of re-drafts and now we’re ready to roll.”

Rumours were that Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinta too were considered for the role. Preity however was not interested. She said, ‘Just because Sonia Gandhi and I have dimples it doesn’t mean I’m qualified to play her.’

The film is however not an official biograhy. Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Sonia Gandhi says, “We are not aware of the film. But as far as cooperating with its production is concerned, we will not do it as it is not an official bio-pic.”

Sonia Gandhi was born Antonia Maino in Orbassano, a town 20 km from Turin, Italy. She met Rajiv Gandhi at a language school in Cambridge, England. They married in 1968. After Rajiv Gandhi’s assasination presurre mounted on her to join politics. She finally entered politics just before the 1998 national election and was chosen the president of the Indian National Congress.

Even if you're only in Italy on a brief holiday, it's worth spending a little time learning basic communication. Outside the major tourist sights, spoken English is not particularly widespread. Without at least a phrasebook you're likely to encounter problems buying train tickets, or finding the right bus stop. And you may also find important notices written only in Italian - for example: museum opening times, details of a transport strike.

A second major reason for learning some Italian is, of course, politeness. It is shocking how many tourists (and British and Americans are sadly big culprits) don't even make the effort to learn to say 'thank you' in Italian. No-one expects a foreign tourist to speak fluent Italian, and most Italians will oblige you with sign language or their few words of English. But it is simple good manners to be able to say 'Excuse me', 'please', 'thank you' and 'Do you speak English?' in the tongue of the country in which you are a guest. And it will do wonders for your relationships with Italians, who will wholeheartedly appreciate any effort made with their language.

Italian for beginners
1. Learn the simple pronunciation rules. Then you can say (and read) the name of your destination, read phrases from a guidebook and you'll be instantly less helpless.
2. Take a phrasebook and/or a dictionary with you, and carry one around in your bag. Otherwise you could be very frustrated if you find yourself in a non-English speaking environment, and need to ask for information.
3. Learn basic phrases and important words by heart: 'thank you', 'where is the bathroom?' etc.

The Miss Italia Nel Mondo -- Malta Contest is one of the leading fashion and beauty events in Malta, bringing together participants of Italian descent or who have Italian surnames. The event has been held for a number of years in Malta, and this year is being organised, for the second time, by Q Productions Ltd, under the directorship of Antonella Vassallo.

This year's Miss Italia Nel Mondo Malta will be held on 27th May 2006 at the Westin Dragonara Resort Malta. The event will be televised live on a local TV station.

The event will consist of an evening of fashion, talent, music and choreography where the stars of the show will be the contestants themselves. There will be various titles awarded, with the topmost being Miss Italia Nel Mondo Malta.

Interviews with prospective participants are already underway however applications from eligible candidates will be received until 5th May, 2006.

To be eligible the candidates will need to satisfy the following requirements:

UKRAINE striker Andriy Shevchenko is leaving AC Milan, which will start negotiations with English champions Chelsea over his transfer, according to a statement on AC Milan's website yesterday.

"I'm leaving for family reasons," said Shevchenko, a former European footballer of the year.

"I thank the club for all they've given me. There's no relationship problem and there's no economic problem."

Adriano Galliani, Milan's vice-president, said in the same statement that the club would start negotiations with Chelsea.

"It will not be easy," he added.
"It's a victory of the English language over the Italian language
"I tried to persuade him to stay up until the last minute. It is certainly the most painful separation during my time at Milan."

Shevchenko's American wife Kristen is reported to have asked her husband to move to London as she would prefer their son Jordan to grow up in an English-speaking country.

If Chelsea completes the capture of the 29-year-old Ukraine captain, he would be its second coup of the close season after the arrival of Germany skipper Michael Ballack on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.

But Shevchenko's move to Stamford Bridge depends on the clubs reaching agreement on a fee.

But Italy's investigations into match-fixing allegations could broaden the range of Ancelotti's options.

Should Juventus, at the centre of the scandal, be relegated to Serie B, its France forward David Trezeguet and Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic could become targets.

Shevchenko has been at Milan for seven years after his $33 million move from Dynamo Kiev, where he won five domestic league titles.

During his time with the Italian club, he won the Champions League in 2003 and the Italian title in 2004.

He has scored 127 goals in 208 Serie A matches for Milan.

He is also the highest scorer in the history of the European Cup, with 52 goals, after grabbing 33 in the Champions League for Milan and 19 while playing for Kiev.

Chelsea, which has just won its second-successive English title, is financed by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.

Filomena "Phyllis" Gustafson is throwing her hat into the election ring for a second time. Gustafson has announced her candidacy for the Town Council Ward 4 seat.
Gustafson, 59, is running for a second time as a Democrat for the Ward 4 seat.
"I ran two years ago and was defeated by a small margin," said Gustafson.
She said she has been involved in politics for the last 30 years. Gustafson was a campaign manager at both the town council and state senate levels.
"I have been in politics for most of my life," she said. Gustafson said she is running now because she wants to take control of the taxes and listen to what the people are trying to say.
"Somebody has to sit down and listen. We all know what the problem is, but nobody takes the time to sit down and listen," she said.
Gustafson is a graduate of Coventry High School and continued her education with studies at Community College of Rhode Island. She is currently retired but previously worked in the jewelry industry in a variety of capacities ranging from designer to owner of R&P Jewelry of West Warwick.
Because she is retired, Gustafson said, she feels that she can give 100 percent to the council seat.
"I won't be a part-time council person," she said.
Gustafson was president of the Vince Lombardi Order of Sons of Italy for 12 years and has been treasurer for the past six year. She started a scholarship program for students of Coventry and West Warwick High Schools who excel academically and in the Italian language.
She said one of the biggest challenges the town faces is the casino issue.
"We have the right to vote and I feel very strongly about that," said Gustafson. "I think every person in Rhode Island has the right to vote on this casino issue. Nobody should tell us how to vote."
Gustafson said one of the things she would like to accomplish if she is elected is to move West Warwick down on the state tax ranking list from sixth to tenth.
"I would like to see us 10 on the list and going down," said Gustafson. "I want to take control of the taxes and listen a little closer to what the people have to say."
Gustafson is the mother of Rhode Island Air National Guard Technical Sgt. Gene A. Gustafson and Glen P. Gustafson. She has two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. Gustafson resides at 183 Lockwood St. with her companion of eight years, Robert Pombo.

Andrew Amoroso of New Albany, Pa., for attaining the highest grade point average (GPA) in the graduating class. Amoroso became only the 40th student to graduate from Wilkes with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

The award was presented by Provost Maravene Loeschke during Wilkes University’s 59th Annual Spring Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 20, 2006. He shared the award with fellow classmate Kathryn Currier, an elementary education major from Rutland, Vermont.

Amoroso also received the Amoroso graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

At a recent academic awards ceremony, Wilkes named Amoroso the Outstanding Graduate for the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The award is given to the student who, in the opinion of the faculty, is the outstanding graduate among students in 14 academic programs. He also received the Frank J. J. Davies Award which is presented to the graduating English major in recognition of outstanding academic achievement.

During his four-year career at Wilkes, Amoroso served as a staff member and later as co-editor of the university’s literary magazine, Manuscript. He was also inducted into the English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta. Through his work with the Manuscript, a school supplies drive was organized for children in Galveston, Texas. He also initiated a tutoring program, which teaches writing skills, at the McGlynn Learning Center. While recruiting volunteer tutors, he remains active as a tutor himself.

A true scholar-athlete, Amoroso was a four-year member of the men’s basketball team and served as a team captain for the Colonels during the 2005-06 season, helping advance the team to the Freedom Conference Championship game. He was a three-time member of the Middle Atlantic Conference Academic Honor Roll and was named the 2006 senior male scholar-athlete of the year.

Last summer, Amoroso studied abroad in Florence, Italy for an intense month-long Italian language and cultural exchange program. During the coming year he, plans to return to Italy and work. In the fall of 2007, he will enter a graduate program in English or attend law school.

Amoroso is a 2002 graduate of Wyalusing High School. He is the son of Ginny and Vince Amoroso, New Albany.

A lot has changed in 100 years.

Places are different, generations have passed and Josephine Mirabelli has seen it all.

Mirabelli, a Lexington resident since 1924, and celebrated her 100th birthday on April 29.

Born Giuseppina Amaru in the North End of Boston to Italian immigrants, both of Mirabelli's parents were Sicilian and her father owned a trade goods store on Prince Street. The second oldest of nine children, Mirabelli spent her youth in Boston, Malden, a small time back in Italy and then to Lexington where her father bought what is now 1963 Massachusetts Ave. in 1924. The Amaru girls were sent to school at Notre Dame Academy and Mirabelli later graduated from Boston University. She never took a job however, choosing to get married in 1928 to Eugene Mirabelli, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Mirabellis had two sons, Richard and Gene, and Josephine stayed at home raising her boys and volunteering for the community.

"I never made any money," she joked.

Starting in the 1930s and through the Second World War, Mirabelli was a volunteer with the American Red Cross and was an air raid warden. She also worked to collect clothes for earthquake victims and spent many hours volunteering in the Lexington store La Tienda, which was a cooperative venture with a group of Mexican immigrants.

"We would work," said Mirabelli of the store. "It was a lot of fun."

Handy with her needle, Mirabelli is one of the founding members of the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society. In her home hang beautiful embroidered drapes of fruits, birds and trees. All the rugs on her floors are ones she made by hand, along with the tapestry on her wall.

In addition to needlework, Mirabelli is also skilled in silver, leather and wood work; decoupage; and hooking. In recent years, Mirabelli has also taken up painting with watercolors.

Mirabelli sang with the Lexington Choral Society and would give lessons in Italian out of her home. She said part of the appeal of the lessons was helping to maintain her own Italian language skills; growing up Italian was always spoken in the home.

"If you know something, you don't keep it to yourself," she said.

As a member of the choral society, Mirabelli had an opportunity to realize her love of choral music and opera. Growing up, her mother would tell all the children the stories portrayed in the operas and then have them listen to them on Saturdays when they were on the radio.

In honor of all her work and dedication to Lexington, she received the Minuteman Cane Award in 1995. [continue]

Italian newspaper geared for the future

'Il Corriere di Tunisi', the only Italian-language paper to be published in the Arab world is facing new challenges as it turns 50, says its editor-in-chief Elia Finzi, the 83-year-old son of the publication's founder, Giuseppe.

The paper is organising a series of events until November this year to further boost relations between the Italian and Tunisian communities which, "thanks to our committment both with Tunisians and the Italians have always been excellent, despite difficult moments," said Finzi in an interview to Adnkronos International (AKI).

The Corriere was "the first foreign paper to announce the independence of Tunisia from France [in 1956]," Finzi said. By then the paper was already well-established in the North Afircan country with Finzi's family having moved to Tunisia in 1829 where his grandfather founded the first foreign printing office in 1880.

The paper covers a wide range of issues and focuses on the news concerning the Italian community in Tunisia and economic and cultural cooperation projects involving Italy and Tunisia.

The paper, said Finzi, "has never missed a day on newsstands though circulation has fallen to 5,000 copies and we had to transform the publication from a weekly to a 48-page by weekly."

" It lives on subscriptions as well as direct sales and gets funding from the Italian government."

One of the many traditions of the Burlington Sons of Italy is to regularly support its High School Scholarship Fund. On Thursday May 4th at the scholarship luncheon held at the Boston Marriott Burlington, President Don McGowan of the Burlington Sons of Italy Lodge 2223, presented a check for $2,000 to Mr. Thomas Imbriglio, Director of Guidance at Burlington High School. The money was the result of a successful dinner/dance and entertainment evening held in early April.

The maintenance of this fund has always been a priority of the order and has received the full support of officers and members. It is but one way the order continues to support connections with and an appreciation of the Italian language and culture and to assist deserving and promising high school seniors to continue their education.

A senior will be chosen this year from students who have shown an interest in the Italian language and culture and who have excelled academically. Mr. Imbriglio will confer with Mr. McGowan and members of the Sons of Italy in order to make a final selection. A decision will shortly be made and the successful candidate will be presented with a check by President McGowan at the graduation ceremony.

The Ocean's Eleven star, who has a house on Lake Como, northern Italy, spends hours reciting lines from language CDs so he can converse fluently with his European neighbours.

But the star admits he struggles to get his tongue round the language, and fears it will be years before he is proficient.

ILICA's goal is to strengthen and spread the Italian language to convey art, science and culture in the US, promoting it in schools and in public awareness. Enhancing the Italian language abroad is considered a must in the inevitable globalisation process, and Italian language will be in the spotlight for two days, 7 and 8 June, in Villa Mondragone, Monte Porzio Catone, at the event dedicated to Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart's lyric-writer, to promote Italian culture in the US. Lorenzo Da Ponte (1749-1838) was the first - he wrote so himself - "to introduce and spread Italian language in the US", and was actually the first Italian language teacher there. The event in Villa Mondragone will therefore be an opportunity for ILICa to present itself better to Italy, creating an event showing how Italian culture can spread as it did where it originated, Rome, centre of the Roman Empire, the cradle of civilisation and progress.
